ETOA sees European Tourism in Crisis Mode


If anyone is familiar with what is currently going on in European tourism with COVID-19, it is Tom Jenkins, CEO of ETOA, European Tour Operators Association. ETOA is an industry association for tour operators and suppliers in European destinations from global brands to local independent companies.

Tom recently told about the crisis in European tourism under one World Tourism Network (WTN) podcast. Said Juergen Thomas Steinmetz, founder of WTN, “Tom has been a leader in the COVID-19 crisis from the very beginning. In fact, we call him Mr. European Tourism, as he is always on top of what is going on in tourism in Europe. ”

The situation that is developing in the UK right now is that the country is largely closed off from the rest of the world due to a new strain of coronavirus. Steinmetz introduced Jenkins to talk about this new situation and tourism in Europe in general. In his introduction, Steinmetz said Tom is a WTN tourist hero, as the association currently has 16. The Hall of International Tourism Heroes recognizes those who have shown extraordinary leadership, innovation, actions and taking the extra step.

Tom began by saying that no one feels less heroic than he does, especially at the moment in a locked London. “The United Kingdom has suddenly found itself like Typhus Mary,” he said, adding, “I honestly think this will pass. I believe that the initial blockade of all outgoing goods, for example with France, will be cleared within the next 24-48 hours.

“It’s going to be very difficult for people in the UK to travel abroad for the next few weeks while people come up with this new strain of virus that pertains. I do not want to downplay the alarming nature.

“I imagine that within 2-3 weeks, things will start to return to normal if one can describe the current crisis as normalcy.”

The World Tourism Network is a new initiative that emerged from a reconstruction. Travel discussion that started back in March this year when COVID-19 became a reality. Today, WTN launches during the month of December with an official launch starting on January 1, 2021. There are already 12 local chapters around the world so far as well as discussion groups on various topics.

In this first launch month, there have been and will continue to be sessions that provide an opportunity to get to know and participate in members of the World Tourism Network and listen to interesting travel and tourism discussions.
