Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær takes down the Premier League title talk

Ole Gunnar Solskjær has dropped the proposal that Manchester United is a candidate for the Premier League title prior to their trip to Leicester on Boxing Day.

United’s 6-2 demolition of Leeds in the Premier League last Sunday put Solskjaer’s side just one point behind second-placed Leicester and five points from leaders Liverpool with a game in hand on both teams.

It’s as close as they have been to the top of the table this Christmas since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, but despite being unbeaten in seven league games and having won all six away games, Solskjaer says the opportunity to become champions the first time since 2013 is not discussed.

Asked how the club deals with being title contenders, the United boss said: “There is noise around Manchester United anyway, so for us it’s about improving ourselves as a team and taking one game at a time. The game and that is the only way you will still challenge for something at the end of a season.

“It’s not something we talk about. The only thing we talk about and focus on is improving every day and learning to deal with certain situations. At the moment, we’re getting praise, and that’s another thing to learn to deal with.”

Sunshine is wary of the Leicester threat

United’s perfect away in the league is threatened against a Leicester team that has won four of their last six matches in all competitions.

United beat the fox 2-0 on the final day of last season to achieve Champions League qualification, but Solskjær is wary of the dangers posed by Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Football stadiums around Europe remain empty due to Coronavirus Pandemic as government social distancing laws prohibit fans at venues, resulting in all fixtures being played behind closed doors.

“We have had some very good matches against Leicester, very tight games. They are a very good side with a very good coach and I have had the pleasure of seeing them under Brendan,” said Solskjaer.

“It was a big test for us to go down to their stadium for the last league game of the summer, and we passed it with flying colors.

“We played a really controlled game and I know it’s not going to be the same now because it’s a different time of the season, but they have some threats that we have to watch out for.”

Sunshine insists Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is getting ‘better and better’ this season

Sunshine insists Anthony Martial is getting “better and better” after the strikers scored their fourth goal of the season on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Everton.

Martial came off the bench to set up Edinson Cavani’s opening goal in the 2-0 win at Goodison Park before scoring himself in stoppage time.

Despite a disappointing start to this campaign, which included a red card against Tottenham in October, Martial has shown signs of returning to his best form after two goals and four assists in his last three games.

The French international was United’s biggest goal scorer last season with 23 goals, and despite having found the net only four times so far this period, Solskjær believes he will continue to improve.

“Anthony has made some important contributions lately – assists, goals scored,” said Solskjær.

“He’s getting better and I think he showed against Leeds – and he knows I know him about this – his running stats from that game set a new standard for him that I want to see more of.

“He always wants it the quality. Maybe his confidence was shattered a bit by what happened earlier in the season with the red card and he has been criticized but Anthony gets better and better and when we get Mason, Marcus and Anthony to shoot on all cylinders too I think , We will be a greater threat to teams. “

Maguire: Man Utd must start winning trophies

Harry Maguire says Manchester United must start winning trophies again after Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup quarter-final victory over Everton.

United won 2-0 at Goodison Park to reach the final four and set up a derby against rivals Manchester City, who knocked out Solskjaer’s side on the same step last season.

United reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League last season – and also finished third in the Premier League – but have not won a major trophy since 2017, and club captain Maguire insists it needs to change.

“We play for Manchester United, we are expected to win trophies. We reached three semi-finals last year, this year we have reached our first semi-final in our first competition,” he said. Sky Sports.

“It’s important to reach these big games, but we now have to start winning the big games, such as the semi-finals and lifting trophies for this club.”

Paul Merson says Manchester United could be Liverpool’s main contender for the Premier League title

Manchester United will have to be taken seriously as Liverpool’s main Premier League title rivals if they come out of their visit to Leicester with another away win, according to Paul Merson.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s position was examined in November after defeats from Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir, and his side’s early elimination of the Champions League intensified the pressure around his job.

But United moved up to third place in the Premier League after a chaotic 6-2 win over Leeds last weekend and Merson believes a seventh consecutive win this season away from Old Trafford on Boxing Day would represent a milestone result.

“If United go on to win at Leicester, this would be a bigger statement than beating Leeds 6-2,” Merson said. Sky Sports. “If they can get away with a win, I would think ‘wow’. It would turn my head and if they win, they would be Liverpool’s biggest rivals.

“I’m just thinking of Man City later in the season, when it comes to the end of the Champions League, if they play a quarter-final on Wednesday, I can not see Pep Guardiola play his strongest team on the weekend. The Champions League is what he wants and City are already many points behind Liverpool.

“With United, I do not feel they have the necessary coverage in the middle to win the Premier League at the moment. You would probably say that United are Liverpool’s closest threat, and I would not have said that three weeks ago.

“When you look at the games Leicester have lost this season at home [against West Ham, Aston Villa, Fulham and Everton], they have been beaten by teams that were expected to try. They were all games they were expected to win, so this one should suit Leicester, as the game at Tottenham did. “
