Sandals Resorts International (SRI), the world leader all inclusive company, today announced the signing of an agreement bringing Sandals® Resorts to a brand new destination at Santa Barbara Resort on the island of Curaçao.

This marks the ninth island target for the brand in the Caribbean. The new Sandals Curaçao will originally include 350 luxury rooms and suites stretched along the Spanish Gulf and the Caribbean Sea, with a further expansion planned in the coming years. Formerly the Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort, part of a wider 3,000-acre development, the resort will be completely “sandaled”, a process to begin in 2021.

Sandals Curaçao will bring the sumptuous resort innovations to the island, which has become synonymous with the world-famous Sandals Resorts brand throughout the region. Conceptual plans for the resort include adding key elements to the signature Sandals experience, including new expansive pools, a range of 5-star Global Gourmet dining options and sumptuous accommodations, including magnificent newly built River Suites. Guests also have access to the nearby 18-hole Pete Dye Championship Golf Course, two on-site marinas and the 38,000-square-foot indoor and outdoor meeting room, the largest on the island.

World-famous for its vibrant culture, pristine beaches and coves, Curaçao also boasts spectacular dive sites and exotic marine ecosystems. With year-round temperatures of 80 degrees, it is hailed as the perfect getaway anytime. The resort will have a positive, immediate and long-term impact on the island and the people of Curaçao. This year alone, it is expected to have an economic footprint of over $ 40 million and an impressive track record of creating new employment. The resort alone adds over 1,200 local jobs consisting of 800 new team members and 400 local artisans and artisans. This will be followed by a positive economic ripple effect for the community, extending to the local taxi and transport sectors, wider supply chain, agriculture, increased air travel and increased annual number of tourists – especially with the main US tourist market.

Roald Smeets, Director of Santa Barbara Beach & Golf Resort, said: “We have a unique opportunity to attract a globally recognized hotel operator, owner and investor like Sandals Resorts, which will bring an unprecedented blessing to Curaçao’s tourism industry and local economy. Its position as both hotel operator and owner with the ability to attract regular scheduled airlines from North America clearly marks it from other hotel groups. We found its impressive plans for the place and dedication to build the profile of Curaçao as a world-class tourist destination, particularly compelling. Its future investment in the community will revive the tourism market, provide livelihoods for hundreds of families and benefit every single person on the island by rejuvenating the local economy. Curaçao has a huge future ahead of it because of this exciting new venture that will truly place Curaçao on the global stage. ”

Sandals Resorts International founder and chairman, Hon. Gordon “Butch” Stewart and Vice President Adam Stewart shared this: “It has been our special pleasure to work with the Curaçao Government and the Smeets family on this exciting new effort for the Sandals brand,” said Gordon “Butch” Stewart “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Roald Smeets, who has been involved in this process and absolutely wonderful to work with. We plan to do more than our part to raise the world’s appreciation of this beautiful country.”

Adam Stewart added: “Every time we expand, we bring the full potential of our 40-year hospitality with us. The new Sandals Curaçao incorporate our philosophy of thinking ahead and looking through a new lens. It is a promise not only to our guests but to our team members for continued innovation. Curaçao is a place to be discovered and today we are so proud to be a part of this community. ”
